Aspirations

An aspiration is a hope or desire of achieving something in the future. As a young adult, I feel it is extremely important to have aspirations because they propel you in life as you always have new challenges. Personally, I’ve always had aspirations. From the age of five I wanted to be a singer, then dancer and then chef - all of these are skills that I cannot do. However, as these aspirations deviated over the years, I finally found what I love to do. Filmmaking.

When I first bought my iPad, all I would do was make music videos and films with my friends and family. At this point, which was probably Year 7, I looked at it as an enjoyable hobby, so I continued making short films and videos, trying to perfect them each time. However, one video I made completely changed my view of the hobby. Obviously, at the time, I saw my video as a masterpiece because it was the best one I’d ever made. Now I look back on it, it certainly wasn’t a masterpiece to say the least. I was so proud of my creation that I showed everyone in my family - parents first. After they watched it, they kept telling me that I had a real talent for the composition, organisation and essentially the making of the film. In other words, editing.

After this, I believed, and still do believe, that I want to be a film editor. Obviously, I am open to change because my career choices have changed over the years. I want to be a film editor because I like that I have been recognised by my friends and family to have a talent for this specific skill. Most importantly, I enjoy editing. This is surely the most important aspect when thinking of a career for your future. Enjoyment.

I feel pretty lucky in the sense that I know or at least have an idea of what I want to do in the future. Lots of my friends are struggling because they don’t really know what they want to do in their future, career-wise. If you’re in this position, honestly, don’t stress about it. Eventually, you will have at least an idea of what you want to do. I suggest you think about your hobbies, think about your favourite subjects, think about the kind of person you are.

Everyone has aspirations, not necessarily about jobs. But about academic grades, the car or house you might own, livelihood and welfare of yourself and others around you. Aspirations challenge you to work towards the ultimate goals of your life. Aspirations are the key.
