After 40 years, Grease finally returned to the big screen for a one time special all over the UK on April 19th 2018 and if you missed out, don't worry, Grease will be shown at Croydon Road Recreation Ground on Sunday 27th May 2018 as a special for the community to watch one of film's all time classics on the big screen once more!

Grease centres around Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta), two love-struck teens who spent the summer at the beach. Unknown to Sandy, Danny has a high profile back at Rydell High where he is part of the T-Birds with Kenickie, Doody, Sonny, and Putzie - the bad boys of the film. As a matter of coincidence, Sandy's plans changed and she begins a new school life. With extreme shock, Sandy finds out that the sweet, loving boy she fell in love with attends her new school.

We are introduced to the Pink Ladies, consisting of Rizzo, Jan, Marty, Frenchy and, by the end of the film, Sandy. They are a group of girls all dating a member of the T-Birds at various points throughout the film. The characters bring the heart of the film, it's unimaginable having a different cast as each singular person brings specific elements of joy in their own special way.

A musical is nothing without a brilliant soundtrack to hold it together and Grease delivers on every single song. The songs were a massive hit for the youth of the 70s; it's impossible (if you know the words or tune) to not sing-a-long or at least mime the words from the iconic opening words, "Grease is the word," to the final ones in the fabulous "We go together" musical number.

Grease embraces everything a musical needs: from the energetic and engaging characters, brilliant musical numbers, fabulous hairstyles and the young love aspect – they all shine, extremely brightly.

The film is timeless, holding up as one of the most iconic films in history and has become a classic over its many years. Grease is relatable on many levels to all kinds of people and is fabulously nostalgic looking back at the 1950s and its quirky features.

It's filled with incredibly memorable scenes. For example, the dance off, where we see Sandy and Danny dance to the "hand jive" in an attempt to win the competition. This sequence specifically showed off the sheer talent of Travolta and Newton-John in unison. A vast range of brilliant dance styles are exhibited, most notably the 'hand jive'. Also, classics like "Summer Night", "Greased Lightning" and "We Go Together" shine and are supported by other incredibly charming nostalgic musical numbers and scenes.

It’s a sugar-rush film, that is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicals of all time.

See Grease on the BIG screen Sunday 27th May at Croydon Road Recreation Ground to experience what a brilliant joyride it is!

My film rating: 5/5
