University of Langley

Last week was the University of Langley. This consisted of trips, taster lecture days and all things Uni. My week began with a full day of Spanish. We learnt about Mexican heritage and Mexican food. I love learning about new cultures and the way people in the world live such different lives than ours in the UK. I’m very grateful for the work and effort Miss Francis put into the day, it was highly interesting and well organised.

The following day was my favourite and one which many were jealous of, Mr Malyszko took my Film class and I to the cinema in Leicester Square. Despite my fear of horror films, we watched ‘A Quiet Place’ which I immensely enjoyed, even with the reoccurring jump scares. I liked the way the director developed the intensity - to the point where it was uncomfortable to look at the screen.

On Wednesday, students were involved in a personal statement writing workshop which I, as well as many others, found extremely helpful. They told us the basic structure and the dos and don’ts when writing the perfect personal statement. We all came out of the workshop feeling relieved and confident that we could write our first draft of our personal statement. We later registered our details into the UCAS website which felt a little strange as we suddenly all realised how soon we’ll be going to University and finishing our A-levels.

On Thursday, a parents’ meeting was held at the school which students could attend. I found this talk extremely useful as we were told more about our applications and firm/insurance offers.

The last day of a very hectic week was finished off by going on a tour around Shakespeare’s London. For this English trip, our class went up to London to find out more about Shakespeare’s life. It was interesting to see sides of London that I’d never seen before such as Whitefriars and Temple. We learnt about the new and old Globe Theatre as well as the many homages to him throughout London.

Overall, I think the University of Langley week was a success as we were given an insight into University life, subject specific themes and applications.

I now feel a lot more informed about the application process. So far, I have applied to the UCAS website and written the first draft of my personal statement as well as prepared my teachers for writing references. Although the following year will be stressful, I know it will be exciting.
