“Time’s Up” & “Me Too” Movements at the Grammys and Golden Globes
The red carpet was taken over by Hollywood’s Time’s Up pioneers at the Hollywood ceremony, standing together at the 75th Golden Globes. Attendees at the prestigious event stood united with victims of sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry by following dress code, stars donned an all-black attire, accompanied by the accessory of the evening, a ‘Time’s Up’ badge, in a silent protest against the abuse, which echoed around the world.
What is the “Time’s Up” Campaign?
“Time’s Up” is an initiative created by 300 female Hollywood actors, executives, writers and directors to “counter systemic sexual harassment in the entertainment business” and to support victims. This includes a $13 million legal defence fund backed by donations from members that will help women facing sexual harassment at work find legal representation, driving a push to have a more even balance of men and women in their employment. Support was also shown for the “Me Too” movement, a hashtag that has been sweeping the world since the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations, encouraging women to speak up if they have ever been sexually harassed. So far, over half a million women have tweeted “Me Too”.
The campaign includes contributors such as Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and most memorably, Oprah Winfrey, who stunned the room into silence and stole the show with her electrifying speech. Winners and pioneers of the campaigns used their moment and time on stage to thank the brave women who spoke out about their abuse.
Oprah Winfrey ended her powerful speech by saying: “So, I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, "Me too" again.”
And it is revealed that the support hasn’t ended there, as following the Golden Globes’ red carpet blackout, those who attended the Grammys showed support for the Time’s Up movement on Sunday night in another way, by wearing white roses on the red carpet. Stars, such as Lady Gaga, Sam Smith and Miley Cyrus, were among those representing the rose at the Grammys, along with its host James Corden.
