LPBS’ Filmbox film festival took place a few weeks ago on Saturday 30th September 2017 where over 1000 free tickets were up for grabs to see four films. Two were animation, fantasy films, Beauty and the Beast and The Red Turtle. From everything I’ve seen and heard, both proved to be a great success amongst the children (and adults of course). The later showings were also very popular, more so amongst adults T2 Trainspotting and Their Finest.
I believe Studio 609 (which seats up to 90 people) and the Performance Hall (which seats up to 400) were both nearly full during all four showings. This was a busy day, not only for all the volunteers, but also the guests because there was so much to do! A fully stocked bar sold your favourite snacks and refreshments, plus freshly made hot pizza from S’apore Vero, which looked absolutely delicious. Later in the evening, there were two performances from two local choirs, Vocal Eclipse and the Beckenham Ladies Choir. The ‘no popcorn’ rule was broken for this special evening, irritated parents kept walking out of Beauty and the Beast as they were pestered by their 8 year old tugging at their arm for “more popcorn”!
As I was a volunteer myself, I had the pleasure of selling ice-creams. This is tougher than it looks, handling money and balancing a heavy ice cream tray around your neck is not my forte. However, I think I did a pretty good job as I sold A LOT of ice-creams, the most popular being honeycomb - the Filmbox classic. The film festival was a celebration of five years of Filmbox, organised by Vivienne Clark, or Ms Clark as I like to call her. The sheer passion the committee have for helping and supporting Filmbox is truly inspiring. I can only imagine the load of work and effort put into the preparation of this immense celebration. Thank you to anybody who did come and celebrate with us, we hope to see you again soon. If you missed the festival, don’t worry because the same friendly people, local ice cream and worthwhile films can be found every fortnight. Everyone’s welcome and encouraged to tell their friends.
